Why We're Here

The College Bridge was developed in response to the current issues plaguing our nation’s public K-12 and higher education institutions. One problem in particular, the fact that 60% of our nation’s high school graduates are not prepared for college-level coursework, is central to The College Bridge’s efforts. This problem, paired with the deep fiscal cuts to California’s public education system and the negative impact these cuts are having on addressing our students’ needs, inspired The College Bridge.

With the deepest gratitude, I would like to publicly thank the people who have been most instrumental in this venture. First, I would like to thank Professor Pat McDonough who challenged our cohort to DO something to improve students' access to college. I’m incredibly thankful for every professor and colleague in my doctoral program (UCLA’s Educational Leadership Program – Amazing Cohort 18!) for their knowledge, support, and advice. I am in awe of the fine and passionate educators who serve as The College Bridge’s Faculty and Curriculum Developers. And I am most appreciative of my co-founders - my husband and partner, Pedro, and my father, Michael Staubly, for their personal support and professional collaboration.

Sincerely,
Lynn Cevallos President and Founder, The College Bridge

The Problem:

Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce, 2011

Our nation and state are plagued with a serious dilemma. The demand for college graduates in the workforce is steadily increasing while college access is rapidly decreasing. Our country’s competitiveness in the world economy will suffer greatly and millions of Americans will be shut out of higher paying careers and thus a higher standard of living. Consider the following statistics:

  • “There will be a shortage of 16 million college-educated adults in the American workforce by the year 2025.” (Lumina Foundation, 2009)
  • “60% of incoming college freshmen are not prepared for college level coursework.” (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, 2006)
  • In 2011, Community Colleges in California will have to reject 400,000 students due to state budget cuts. (LA Times, 3-31-11)

The Solution:

The College Bridge was founded to help close the gap between the supply and demand for college-educated workers by strategically preparing students to be accepted into and graduate from college. Middle and high school students will develop a strategic plan to map out the most effective path to reach their academic goals. Current college students are coached academically and counseled to select a major leading to a rewarding career and graduate in the least amount of time.

The College Bridge:

  • Provides personalized academic coaching/tutoring to prepare students for college-level coursework.
  • Prepares students to succeed in the SAT®, ACT®, CSU and Community College Placement Tests.
  • Offers college planning workshops that guide students through the entire process from choosing a school and major to financing their college dreams.
  • Strategically remediates and accelerates current college students through math, reading, and ESL into the for-credit sequence.

Our mission is to turn your college dreams into reality.
